What Is Difference Between Milling and Welding-


Principle of Milling Machine-
  • The main principle of a milling operation is, It consists of one multitooth cutting tool which is rotated. The workpiece is placed against the rotating cutter in that way milling operations are performed such as to cut slot or keyway etc. The main function of the milling machine is to remove excess material from the workpiece.
  • The table is mounted on the saddle. the saddle is move-in to-and-fro motion i.e. according to requirement. the table is move-in crosswise from a workpiece. On the table, vice is a present main faction of vice is to hold the workpiece in proper position during operation.
  • Milling machines are available in CNC machines in milling operations (Automatic) is also called the machining center.

Parts (Components) of Milling Machine-
1) Base-
All the milling machine parts are assembled on the base. It is one of the casted parts is fixed on the floor with the help of bolts.
2) Column-
All the transmission systems in the milling machine such as the transmission of motion from gear to an arbor or the cutter are part of the column. Some of the guideways are present on the column front side due to the knee being able to slide.
3) Knee-
The function of the knee is to support the saddle and table or other which clamp the workpiece during operation. The knee is also used to resist the deflection which is generated due to cutting forces.
4) Saddle-
The saddle is mounted on the knee and it is moved with hand or with the help of electric power. The saddle is move perpendicular to the column.
5) Table-
The table is mounted or placed on the saddle and the table can move with hand or electric power. The top surface of the table is finished properly so the workpiece mounts properly. The direction of the table is opposite the saddle.
6) Arbor-
One end of the arbor is connected with the arm and another end is connected with a column. On the arbor, different types of milling cutters are placed.
7) Spindle-
The spindle is an important part of the milling machine which is connected to a gear, pulleys, and motor which is inside the column. Spindle not connected permanently with arbor. For the changing of milling cutters, we can easily remove arbors and change them.
Types of Milling Machine Operations-
Common Type of Milling Processes are,
1) Plain or Slab Milling Process-
The plain milling operation is used to make flat horizontal flat surfaces. In the operation of plain milling, a plain milling cutter is used which is connected to the arbor. In the plain milling, the motion of the table is upward for giving depth of cut.
2) Face Milling-
In the face milling operation is used to make flat vertical surfaces.
3) Angular Milling-
In the angular milling operation, an angular milling cutter is used. The teeth of the angular milling cutter are inclined or it may be single inclined teeth or double inclined teeth. It depends on how much inclination angle is required for the workpiece.
4) Form Milling-
he form milling is used for irregular or uneven surfaces. In the form milling operation form milling cutter is used and the design of this cutter depends on the required final product. The profile of the form milling cutter is the same as that of the profile of the final product.
5) Straddle Milling-
In the straddle milling cutter, two perpendicular straddle milling cutters are used. The distance between two cutters is maintained with spacers. This type of operation is used to make square or hexagonal profiles.
6) Gang Milling-
In this operation two or more two cutters are used is placed on the single arbor. With help of this operation at a time, we were able to do the operation on vertical or horizontal surfaces. Because of this operation, the overall time is reduced.


Welding means joining two materials or metals permanently. When the two metals are joined then the one assembly is created is called Weldment.
Basically two types of welding processes are categorized,
  1. Solid State Welding
  2. Liquid State Welding (Fusion Welding)
  • In solid-state welding, the two metals are joined but in this process, both of the metals are not melted. They are joined with the help of heat and apply external pressure. The function of solid-state welding is Resistance welding, Cold roll welding, etc.
  • Most of the time, fusion welding is used than solid-state welding. In fusion welding, the base metal is heated up to it melt. Arc Welding, Gas Welding is the types of fusion welding.
  • During the welding heat source is produced for that it generates higher temperature with a higher rate or also isolates from the environment. Such as in electro arc welding arc is used as a heat source and in gas welding, a chemical flame is used as a heat source.
Types of Electrode-
The electrode is available in two forms i.e. Consumable Electrode and NonConsumable Electrode.
In the Consumable electrode, the electrode is used as the filler material. When the electric current is passed then the electrode melt and is poured into the gap of two joining materials. The word consume means during welding operation due to melting of electrode it becomes shorter.
The non-consumable electrode works as an electrode and this electrode is not used for the filler material. In the consumable electrode, a coating is done. Arc is generated in between cathode and anode. When the electrode is consumed then the black formation is done which is a protective layer for newly joined materials and it also works as a deoxidizer. The coating thickness is large then the weld pool is also large in welding material.
